Five Survive Quotes
"So, she looked away from her face, their face, ignoring them both."
"But it was harder to ignore something when you were trying."
"Which was strange when you thought about it; that you traveled down a highway when high was right there in the name."
"There were things in there no one else could ever see. No one. Not even Maddy."
"How freeing it would be to just do or think, and not have to double-think or triple-think."
"Shame was a red feeling, a hot one, just like guilt and anger."
"Small, minuscule, a tiny firework bursting in her head, but it felt good."
"Isn’t that weird, that a person can just change like that?"
"And, most importantly, she always cut sandwiches into triangles."
"Not like it was a difficult one: think primary colors."
"We could walk back to that small town we passed. Ruby. Find a landline there to call for help if there’s still no service. It was only a few miles back."
"You have to run, Red. If there's ever an active shooter. Run, don't hide. It's harder to hit you when you're moving, so run! Run now, sweetie. Run!"
"We've already lost two windows, which is not good news. So, the first thing I want us to do is to board up those broken windows, for extra protection."
"No one’s getting shot. We are getting out of this alive, you and me."
"Maybe those six bulletproof vests I packed will come in handy."
"We can use the mattress from my bunk to block up the big window behind the sofa."
"A plan must have two parts, and you have to make sure either way plays out in your favor."
"Finding a sniper in the pitch-black wide-open nothing. Something about needles and haystacks, Red thought, or a shot in the dark. Literally."
"When someone shoots a rifle, is there something other than the noise? Does it give off any light, a flash?"
"Is now a good time to mention I packed my thermal imaging goggles?"
"You could do that with memories too, sometimes. Lie to yourself, think fake thoughts to cover the ones you didn't want."
"It's like that little explosion of light when you fire."
"That must be the best well done you could get, beyond words."
"But her voice wasn’t normal, and Red thought she must still be angry at her. Disappointed."
"Arthur reached out a hand and Red took it, pulling her to her feet, but it was too late, Oliver was in the doorway, pushing past Reyna to walk down the steps."
"Because he said. He told us he would kill them and I believed him."
"I’m finer than a frog hair split four ways," Joyce answered.
"Like this," he showed her, opening his mouth in an exaggerated chew so she could see the mulched-up orange coating his tongue.
"But it was the daughter who stayed in Red’s mind, between thirty-one feet and the unknown pattern in the curtains."
"I need to pee," Red said, only becoming true as she said it.
"The sniper had known about the note. It could have been a lucky guess, seeing Oliver shake Don’s hand."
"So why does your uncle have a photo of someone else's family in the glove compartment?"
"Do you know all the stuff your weird uncle gets up to?"
"You're the one who told me we had to keep everything as cheap as possible so that Red could come!"
"You don't know Reyna. None of us do, apparently."
"I made my choice and I pretended not to know him."
"It’s not about that... It’s not about what we did, what happened. It’s not about me."
"We aren’t the ones with the secret. It’s one of you."
"If I don’t get my answers soon, I will start shooting at the RV randomly."
"You’re getting closer. Yes, this is about someone who died."
"It’s not me, we just learned that! It’s not about the Frank Gotti case, so it’s nothing to do with me or Maddy!"
"Oliver?" Maddy asked. He shushed her, the sound too harsh, like a coiled snake buried there in his throat.
"Keep your hands where I can see them or I will duct-tape them behind your back."
"What I was saying is, it doesn’t matter anymore, whatever this secret is that the sniper wants. Because now we have the upper hand."
"You mean send Red out to go get help?" Simon yelled, hands cupped over his ears.
"I’m saying that Red can leave the RV without getting shot!"
"I don’t think I can," she cried, into the music.
"You’re the only one who can!" he said. "It can’t be Reyna, or me, or Arthur, or Simon. You’re the only one who looks like Red. It has to be you. You’ll be fine."
"You don’t have to do it, Maddy!" Red shouted, staring at Oliver instead.
"Why are you making her do this, Oliver? You don’t know it will work."
"I’m not leaving you," Red lowered her face so they were eye to eye. "I’m not leaving you, okay, Maddy? I promise. Never."
"It’s a terrible idea," Arthur said loudly. "Maddy, you shouldn’t—"
"I will only ask you one more time!" he screamed, and the knife glinted at her. "Take off your clothes!"
"Don’t go," she said. "Don’t do it, you don’t have to."
"No," Red said. "I won’t. I’m not listening to you anymore."
"Red’s your color," Simon said to her over the music, an awkward closed-mouth smile on his face.
"I’ve got her, Red!" Arthur’s voice appeared behind her. "You get her feet."
"You okay?" Reyna mouthed to her, across the RV.
"What the fuck is going on?" Simon said, walking over, pink stains of Maddy’s blood up his forearms too. "Why did you do that, Arthur? I don’t underst—"
"I tried to stop you from leaving, because I didn’t trust him after what he did to Don and Joyce. I tried, Red, I did."
"I don’t understand why you won’t say who it is. That’s all we need. It never needed to come to this, I didn’t want it to come to this."
"That’s a crime, Red. That’s perjury. What the fuck were you thinking? You can’t be that desperate for money!"
"Don’t be ridiculous," he said, slapping himself on the chest. "Our mom is not a criminal."
"Stop fucking lying, Red!" He pointed his finger through her chest, leaving a crater behind. "Stop lying. She wouldn’t do that!"
"That's how my mom was killed too, five years ago. Two shots to the back of her head while she was on her knees. She was executed."
"A plan must have two parts. You have to make sure either way plays out in your favor."
"You have to think before you throw around baseless accusations about my family."
"But now the plan was gone, dead, it only worked if no one knew."
"It's not true. None of that is true. Maddy, what the fuck are you saying?!"
