Escaping Peril Quotes
"No dragon was safe in the Sky Palace, but the ones in the most danger by far were the daughters of Queen Scarlet."
"She can’t be queen forever," Tourmaline said. "She has been queen forever," Ruby argued.
"Don’t be an idiot. You’re only ten, and furthermore, you’ll never be ready," Ruby had whispered back.
"Right." Tourmaline rolled her eyes. "I’ll just wait for a bunch of eggs that haven’t even hatched yet to save us."
"The prophecy will take care of the war," she argued. "The brightest night is in four days … "
"But now Tourmaline was gone. And perhaps acting like a queen was exactly what had gotten her killed."
"Never let them see that you’re terrified, that’s what Tourmaline said. Act like a queen so that one day they’ll be cheering for you to slit Mother’s throat."
"But what am I going to do without her? Oh, the unbearable pain!!"
"I don’t want to watch you die," Ruby growled.
"Just until Ruby’s gone," Peril muttered, pacing. "That’s what he said. Hours ago."
"Peril could understand that it would be easier for Clay and his friends if she stayed out of the way, so that Ruby’s visit would go as smoothly as possible."
"Queen Scarlet wouldn’t kill her daughter in front of all these dragons, would she?"
"I don’t have to be," Peril said stubbornly. "Clay says I can be whoever I want to be."
"I am making my own choices," Peril thought grumpily. "I’m choosing to do whatever you think I should do."
But she’s not just any monster," Scarlet said smugly. "She’s my monster. And she’s so very useful.
"But if I need to fry someone to cinders, I will, but I’m not rampaging around killing dragons for fun! I haven’t even killed anyone in months! Bloodthirsty INDEED."
"Everyone wants to see their enemies on fire. Are you telling me your mother never cheered herself up by having someone torch a bunch of bad guys in front of her?"
"I hope you die," Avalanche said to Peril. "I would say it’s mutual," said Peril, "except that I’m going to forget you exist in about a minute, so I don’t actually care."
"She’s the deadliest weapon Mother has ever found."
"I hope you know how to control your new champion, Mother. Because she’s not just a threat to me."
"Peril also spotted several SkyWings spiraling around the mountain peaks."
"I bet she wishes she’d been nicer to me now. Who’d be a better guard than me?"
"So I’ll do this one thing for Ruby. I’ll find Queen Scarlet, turn her into a pile of ashes, get all redeemed and pardoned and welcomed back everywhere."
Turtle flapped up, panting a little. "I think," he wheezed, "someone might be … following us."
"One way to find out, of course, would be to go set the trees on fire."
"I guess, maybe. The dragons in the arena never had spears."
"But if she could do that, Glory really would be dead already," Peril argued.
"I’m the one keeping you alive." That’s what she always said.
"You should try it the normal way. Here, open your mouth and I’ll throw some in."
"YUCK!" she roared, surging up with her wings flared. "Try that again, SeaWing!"
"Peril paused on the riverbank, squinting at him. She had been joking, of course."
"I’ll be back in a minute," she snapped.
"Why are you glaring at me?" Turtle asked.
"Your face kind of looks like it hates me today," Turtle observed.
"I have a plan for Possibility," Peril said.
"Let’s just dive right into the middle of the market, and then all those dragons will start stampeding around yelling about what a menace I am."
"I don’t care about attention," Peril said.
"Wonderful," she said. "You couldn’t have mentioned that a bit sooner? Now all I can do is WORRY about it."
"She flexed her talons, feeling the warm shift of her firescales."
"I’m going to nudge wings and poke tails and HUG EVERYONE!"
"I think maybe don’t sing that song to your grandma."
"She’ll be fine. Safe with his loving grandmother."
"And then, with a ferocious crack, she snapped Queen Scarlet’s neck."
"But you can make up for what you’ve done. At least you can try."
"I’m also great at toasting squirrels and boiling water, anytime you need either of those."
"I’m not going to hurt you. We didn’t expect him to run, so it’s my own fault for not taking more precautions."
"You can't be a traitor to someone who shouldn't be ruling over you in the first place."
"No matter what he’d done, she believed there was a part of him that had wanted to help her … that had wanted to be a family."
"Nobody should be the boss of someone else’s magic."
"It felt like hours of Moon not moving and Peril sitting there watching her not move."
"That’s enough. That solves that problem."
"I did it. I saved the world. And Clay wasn’t even watching."
"A dragon’s not a thing. You shouldn’t be able to enchant someone like that! It’s wrong."
"We’re not so different, you and I. Particularly when it comes to trustworthiness."
